Faith Focus: 'I love you, Daddy'

Rodrick knows hard times. He grew up moving from home to home. As an adult, he’s struggled with addiction. His four children have spent time in the care of Child Protective Services.

That’s why his road to self-sufficiency is so important to him. He’s been sober since 2011 and embraced counseling through Star of Hope in Houston, a Christ-centered community dedicated to meeting the needs of the homeless, starting in 2012. He went on to earn his GED and hear about Buckner International for the first time.

Recently, he and his family were part of the first groups to move into the new Buckner Family Pathways program in Houston, a ministry that provides secure housing, child care assistance, practical classes and spiritual encouragement so single parents can strive for their educational goals.

“I’m trying to pursue a career and really excited about it,” Rodrick said. “My kids are in a stable environment. I’m able to focus on things I need to do and get myself together at the same time.”

Buckner staff members are encouraging him through the program, and Rodrick has sensed the power of prayer. He’s learned a lot about being a father and grows as a parent and a person daily. He’s also grown extremely close to his children.

So Rodrick pushes forward. His spirit reminds me of Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

The fruits of Rodrick’s journey already are showing themselves: A strong family, healing and a bright future. But the change is more than visible; it’s audible as well.

“I can see the love most of all," Rodrick says. "They always say, ‘I love you, Daddy.’”

In the wake of Father’s Day, will you pray for Rodrick and his family this week?
