Houston Astros baseball camp gives students new experiences

Kids in the Buckner Family Hope Center™ programs learn the fundamentals of baseball

Last month, 20 children from both the Buckner Family Hope Center™ locations in Houston had the opportunity to attend baseball camp with the Houston Astros.

The experience didn’t miss a detail. When the group arrived, they were given uniforms to dress like an official baseball player. The students learned the fundamentals of baseball like throwing with proper form, catching, hitting and bunting and running bases. They even played a few scrimmage games throughout the week. On Friday night, the students and other attendees gathered to play a full baseball game. After the big game, the players enjoyed snow cones, books and Houston Astros hats.

Other valuable lessons the students learned were how to play as a team and what it looks like to be a good sport – both important skills to learn they can carry through the rest of their lives.

“Partnerships like the Astros give our kids the opportunity to go on field trips that expose them to new and different experiences that help that make memories that last a lifetime,” shared Dior Burns, director of administration and operations in Houston. “It allows them to dream and think beyond the confines of what they have always known.”

Playing sports can also teach problem-solving skills as well as coping mechanisms that translate into other areas of life. There were even a few students unsure about playing baseball but chose to jump in and try it out.

“Events like these give our children the opportunity to find out their strengths and interests, while also giving them the opportunity to experience new things,” shared Keyana Wilson, Family Hope Center at Reed Road children’s program supervisor. “It’s our intention to create these experiences to open their minds and hearts to new possibilities beyond what they may be able to imagine.”

Buckner Children and Family Services in Houston was also selected as a Share2Care Charity for the Astros’ home game on Aug. 2 against the Boston Red Sox. A portion of the game’s Share2Care raffle will support the ministry.
