North Way Christian Community Church and ComputeReach donated 30 PowerMac G4 desktop computers for Buckner’s Mexico and Peru programs. Each location received 15 refurbished machines in October.
In Mexico, the computers are being used in three Buckner programs. The children’s home in Mexico City, Pan de Vida, will use the computers to teach a design and screen printing program for teenagers. Some computers also will be used in the Mana Community Transformation Center for general computer training for adults and children. The Mefiboset and Zaachila CTCs in Oaxaca, Mexico, will use the computers for a basic training course for the children in both centers.
In Peru, the computers will be used at the program in Pamplona, which is just north of Lima. Buckner serves children and families in the community with various types of support, including food, job training and health services. The computers will be used in the afterschool program so children can finish their homework. Many of the families cannot afford computers, thus having to pay for computer and Internet use in public places. In some of the public cafes, pornography is a big problem. Now kids will be able to do their homework in a safe environment.
“Children are our priority, so for them to be able to do their homework in a safe environment is really important,” said Matt Asato, director of humanitarian aid. “Buckner has had a great relationship with North Way, and now a new relationship with ComputeReach. We’re really excited and thankful for both of these.”
ComputeReach is a technology outreach mission that primarily serves communities in and around Pittsburgh, Pa. They also serve other regions of the United States and international locations. North Way Community Church is an interdenominational Christian church in Wexford, Pa. It has generously supported Buckner’s international programs for the past year.
