Talkington Charitable Foundation establishes endowment for Buckner Lubbock programs
LUBBOCK, Texas – The J.T. and Margaret Talkington Charitable Foundation, Inc. established a $500,000 endowment to Buckner Children and Family Services to provide scholarship assistance and support to the single parent families served by My Father’s House Lubbock.
My Father’s House Lubbock provides single-parent families the opportunity to live in a safe, secure environment while completing their educational or vocational goals and learning the skills needed to become self-sufficient. Families are provided with support through access to affordable housing, childcare, parent education, budget training, life skills and individual group counseling.
“We are thankful for the support of the Talkington Foundation whose generous endowment makes it possible for us to continue to provide academic scholarships to the single mothers we serve as they strive to establish lasting self-sufficiency,” said Denese Thetford, Buckner Foundation gift officer. “The endowment will not only provide monetary help, but also hope for a better tomorrow as these mothers earn a higher degree and their children grow up in stable homes.”
Established in 1997 to enhance and benefit the Lubbock community and its residents, the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Charitable Foundation, Inc. is a private foundation that funds operational expenses and building capital projects for public charities exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. To honor the history of J.T. and Margaret Talkington’s philanthropy in their local community of Lubbock, Texas, the Foundation primarily limits its awards to proposals benefitting public charities in Lubbock and Hockley Counties.
“We are excited to partner with Buckner Children and Family Services and are grateful for the work done through My Father’s House Lubbock as they assist in providing opportunities to single parents that may not have been available to them otherwise,” said Norton Baker, president of the Talkington Foundation Board of Directors. “It is a tremendous organization and the Talkington Foundation is pleased to be able to assist in their mission.”
Buckner has been dedicated to providing services to protect at-risk children and build strong families in Lubbock since 1958. Last year in Lubbock, Buckner served more than 624 people through Buckner Foster Care and Adoption and My Father’s House Lubbock. Buckner also offers an After-Care program that helps former foster children transition from the state's care into self-sufficient adulthood.
