Teens strive for success with help from Buckner Houston
One of the cornerstone programs at the Buckner Family Hope Center Houston/Aldine in Houston is the Teen Enrichment Academy. High schoolers take life skills and job readiness classes after school and during the summer.
Once students graduate from the Teen Enrichment Academy, the staff encourages them to keep in touch and to continue to give back to others who are walking the same path as they did.
Recently, two of the spring 2015 graduates came by to tell how excited they were about their new jobs and to thank the staff for preparing them so well. The girls also offered to come talk with the current students to tell them about their experience. Both spoke on how the programs helped them in obtaining employment and encouraged the students to "pay attention to every little thing, even if it doesn't seem important right now, because it will all come in handy in the near future."
Rebecca (a senior at MacArthur High School and a graduate of the Empower to Employ Program) and Esmerelda (a junior at MacArthur High School and a former attendee of the Life & Leadership Program) are currently both employees at a local Chick-Fil-A.
“Communication skills, having a positive attitude, the interview process, resume writing, how to handle money properly and Christian principles” were all things that the former students said the program helped them with. They gave credit to the program for preparing them for work and both were very thankful because they are now able to help their families and can also pay for their own school supplies, clothes and the many upcoming expenses for their senior years. Both girls plan to attend college after graduating high school and will be first generation college students.
