Who do you say you are?
We are friends, mothers, sons, employees, leaders … and much more. Who do you say you are? Where do you find your identity? It’s not something we often stop and think about. But if you look at your priorities, and listen to what you speak over yourself, you’ll likely get some insight.
And I know for me, it sometimes isn’t what I want to see. In my mind, I know I’m a Christian and that I’m loved by the Most High. But I often let setbacks or mistakes take up real estate in my mind. Rather than meditating on what I’ve done wrong that day, or what I still need to accomplish, God reminds me that first and foremost, I belong to him.
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God - children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” - John 1:12-13
“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” - Romans 8:1
These words are sacred reminders that we're children of God, but also offer a childlike truth we can rest in: We can look to him to guide and protect us just like a parent does for their child.
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” - Luke 12:6-7
When I focus on the truth of who I belong to, it washes away the pressure to be the perfect friend, wife, employee or mother. We are known and loved by God, not because of our efforts but because of who he is.
