When I was young, I wanted to be somebody wise, successful and kind. I wanted to change the world for the better. My grandfather’s unyielding encouragement and my grandmother’s consistent affirmation of myself made me believe I could do it all.

As a child I had loved the poem “Footprints in The Sand.” I thought it so beautiful. No matter how I was feeling, God was there to carry me and my burdens. I was never truly alone, even when I did not see anyone.

Yet, as I grew older, life happened. Choices were made and consequences had to be dealt with. I became fearful of the world, and I lost hope: Hope in my family, for my education and career. Worst I lost hope in myself. I felt that the person I once thought myself to be was gone.

On a day I was feeling low and trying to seek purpose, I came across Proverbs 3:5-6.

“Trust in the Lord with all my heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about him in all your ways, and he will guide you on the right paths.”

Simple as this verse is, it hit me hard. I read it once. I read it again. I read each phrase over and over. I realized how much hope and faith I had truly lost.

These verses were a reminder of the faith I had as a small child. It was the spark reignited my faith, hope and love of life again. It was that spark that encouraged me to stay strong and follow the path and opportunities God placed before me.

I am not perfect; I am only human. There is great beauty in that. To be imperfect, and yet know there is one who will still love you.

Things didn’t change immediately. It took a lot of hard work, change of mindset, and a strong faith, but things slowly started to fall into place.

Now, seven years later, I realized God’s path for me was so much greater, even though I might not have taken the path I once envisioned for myself. His path grew me in ways no other would have. I see the purpose in it now. It just took faith knowing I was where I needed to be.

When things start to feel overwhelming, frustrating, confusing or you just feel lost, remember you are not alone. Let yourself be carried. When life isn’t going as planned, let God guide you. Put your trust in him instead of your own understanding. He knows where you are meant to be.

“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” – Psalm 62:8
