The grand opening of the Buckner Family Hope Center® at San Agustín Etla, located in the central Mexican state of Oaxaca, was commemorated on Aug. 23 with a public ribbon cutting, lunch and a shoe distribution. The opening was a part of Buckner Mexico's 15th anniversary celebration. This is the second Family Hope Center location in Mexico.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Albert Reyes, president and CEO of Buckner International, said Buckner Mexico’s desire is to reach the hearts of the people through services so they can live happier and live well.
"We want this Family Hope Center to be a light of hope for the families that are with us today, but also for many other people who still don’t know about Buckner Mexico,” Reyes said. “Our goal is to reach those who need it most.”
The Family Hope Center works as an intervention model, providing services within a family strengthening framework to prepare families to overcome adversity. For the families in San Agustín Etla, they will have access to free classes, counseling and activities.
“Today in San Agustín Etla, we begin to write a new story for the families that will join Buckner Mexico,” Reyes continued. “The work done by the Family Hope Center’s staff will be crucial to achieve their goals and dreams.”
The ribbon cutting drew approximately 100 children and families, along with local supporters of the Family Hope Center, Buckner leaders and local government officials with whom Buckner Mexico has worked with, making it possible for hope to reach those in the community.
Volunteers joined efforts to serve each of the children and families in attendance.
The children enjoyed a journey through activities such as painting, crafts and games until they reached their destination: shoes, which they received with big smiles on their faces. The parents thanked Buckner, saying the distribution would help with expenses as they prepare for the new school year.
Following the ceremony, Isaac Cruz Cano, San Agustín Etla municipal president (like a mayor but for a colonia) shared words of gratitude.
“I have no words to express how grateful our people are that they are here, and we are convinced we will make more than one child smile,” Cano said. “We know there will be more Buckner activities for the community of San Agustin Etla. We can only thank you for your support.”
