In July, the Buckner Family Hope Center™ at Aldine in Houston hosted a summer camp where children attended different programs featuring science, cooking and art. 
 
Students learned about the rainforest and the characteristics specific to that habitat for the first week of camp. They learned about the many colorful plants and wildlife of the rainforest and ways they can help properly care for and conserve that ecosystem. 
 
“We even discussed rainforests located around the world and the role they play when it comes to the health of our whole planet,” shared Utricia Randolph, children’s program supervisor at the Family Hope Center. 
 
Groups worked together to create dioramas based on different rainforests around the world.

For another activity throughout camp, kids enjoyed a cooking class. Each child had the chance to make pancakes. From mixing to the right consistency, adding the topping of their choice and even adding food coloring, they loved seeing different colored pancakes. 
 
For children ages 9 and 10, they created their own pudding cup mix and enjoyed their culinary creations outside. 

Young Audiences, Inc. of Houston helped celebrate art with the theme, “I am love.” The students painted with watercolors.
 
“After painting, the students each said what the words ‘I am love’ meant to them,” Randolph said. “Some mentioned it meant helping their parents, being kind to others and self-love.”

The students had a fun-filled month of learning and growing at the Family Hope Center camp and are ready to head back to school with their new knowledge!
